Short bio examples are useful to generate ideas for your bio on either a blog, twitter, facebook or your favourite social media platforms. They are great for giving a visitor a quick understanding of what you’re about. A short bio is useful to introduce yourself, highlight achievements, list credentials and any notable projects with which you are involved. A short bio should be short and concise, listing only relevant information. Avoid listing personal statistics, such as family and hobbies; instead angle the bio to the intended audience, whether for a personal website or a professional networking website.

My short bio

So to start us off, my short bio reads as follows:

Mal Roberts is a Brand and Marketing Strategist who partners with CEOs, executives and solopreneurs to grow their personal and professional brands, human-to-human. After spending nearly a decade working in PR and marketing for large brands and startups, Mal knows what truly drives conversions —and it’s not mastering the marketing flavor of the week. It’s how well you connect with the heart-beating people you’re trying to help and communicate your understanding back to them.

As you can see, its quite formal as I’m aiming it at a business audience.

OK. So how do I start to write my short bio?

If you’re stuck for inspiration, take a few minutes to write down a few things about yourself, namely:

Begin by taking stock of your life and jotting down the following:

  • Your full name or your nick name if its not formal
  • Where you were born, where you live or have lived
  • Education — where you went, dates of attendance and graduation
  • Employment — where you work or have worked
  • Awards and other accomplishments
  • Decide if  your age is relevant
  • Hobbies and passions add a human touch
  • Organizations you have joined in the past or belong to now

Now decide which of those is important. Which ones define you as a person and you’d like to get across to other people. Also decide whether you want it to be formal or informal, depending on the audience.

Length of your short bio

Most social media sites have a limit on the amount of characters that can be used in a short bio:

  • Facebook Short Description: Limited at 155 characters
  • LinkedIn Professional Bio Length: Limited at 120 characters
  • Twitter Bio Character Limit: Limited at 160 characters
  • Pinterest Description Length: Limited at 160 characters
  • YouTube Channel Description: Your main channel description can be up to 5,000 characters in length!
  • Google+: No limits and plenty of guidance provided
  • Instagram Description Length: Limited at 150 characters

Other considerations

Introduce Yourself

Begin the short bio by introducing yourself, and make sure that you’re writing in the third person. For example, write “Bill Tobbins is a freelance writer” rather than “I am a freelance writer.” State what year your work experience began, such as “has been writing  since 1984” or “worked as a stiletto repairer since 2001,” and list any areas of  expertise that you’d like to get across.

Education and Credentials

After the introductory sentence, you should list your educational qualifications with the names of the degrees that you were awarded and where you earned them. If you have any other relevant word or voluntary experience, additional certification or are a member of a professional organisation then list it here too.

Notable Achievements

Also don’t forget to include any notable achievements or awards that you’ve earned. Keep the information relevant to the intended audience of the bio. Remember that the achievements can be either business or personal depending on the image you want to portray of yourself.

Closing Statement

At the end of your short bio, state any projects that you’re currently working on, or looking forward to starting. You may want to put your town and location at the end too, but don’t use your full address.

And finally…

Remember that you may need more than one type of bio, depending on where you want to post it. Also, make sure that you adjust the short bio as necessary when your education, expertise or achievements change.
